Pot size: 4-inch nursery pot Prayer plants are a popular plant among home gardeners, but they can be a little tougher to keep happy than your average houseplant. But with proper care and condition, they are sure to paint your space wonderfully.
Care: Initial Care (After receiving the plant)
Leave the plant in its nursery pot for a few days, if the soil is looking dry and leaves are drooping, water the plant and keep in a shady location for a day.
Watering
Calathea like to have moist soil or planting substances, but not soggy.
They do not want lots of water, as it can drown them. When you water a Calathea plant, do not water it so much that the plant ends up sitting in standing water.
Potting Mix
A good potting mix consists of one part soil, two parts coco peat, one part perlite, and one part compost.
Light
Calathea plants need bright, but not direct, sunlight to grow. This is because they grow on the floor of jungles and forests where they get limited light through the tops of the trees. In fact, direct sunlight will burn the leaves of a Calathea plant and cause it to lose its vibrant colors.
Dont's
Don't keep the prayer plant in direct sunlight, it will burn their leaves
Initial care for 1-2 weeks after receiving plant at your location.
Check the moisture in the soil before watering it.
Poke your finger into the soil, if dry then apply water.
Keep the plant in indirect light.
Why are the leaves of my Calathea Dottie curling?
The leaves of your plant could be curling due to intense light or a lack of water. When these plants are underwatered or placed in sources of strong light this can cause their leaves to curl inwards in order to protect themselves. Test the moisture of the soil and try moving your plant to a less bright spot to see if this helps with the leaf curling issue.
Where should I keep my Calathea Dottie?
Keep your Calathea Dottie away from drafts and heating systems and make sure it has access to medium indirect light. It’s important that your plant is not placed in direct sunlight as this can scorch and damage it’s leaves. Humidity is also very beneficial to Calathea plants so a kitchen or bathroom can be good.
